Compiled by the Modern Language Association, this is an essential bibliography for literary criticism on all nationalities, periods, types of literature, and authors, with the exception of classical Greek and Latin literature, which is covered in L'Annee philologique. MLAIB is also strong in scholarship on folklore, linguistics, and the teaching of rhetoric, composition, and literature. It covers articles, books, and dissertations in literature and the additional fields mentioned above.
Academic Search Complete (1984 - Current)
This database provides many full text links to a mix of general interest publications and those in specific academic areas, such as social sciences, humanities, education, language and linguistics, arts, and literature. Publications regarded as interdisciplinary are also represented. ASC is a good general topic database for preliminary research, covering core publications and updated daily.
ImportantLiterary Reference Center (EBSCO)
A database covering authors and works most commonly studied from high school through college. Includes selected literary criticism, plot summaries, author biographies, author interviews, book reviews, poems, short stories, and images.
Gale Literary Index
This is a free web source that leads to where reprints of criticism can be found in the Gale series hardcopy reference volumes. Gale excerpts key passages of general criticism from books and articles. A well known title covered by the index is Dictionary of Literary Biography.
Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature (1920 - 1997)
A bibliography of international scholarship on literatures in English (British, American, Asian, African, Australian, and Canadian) and the English language. ABELL is especially strong in books published in Britain and articles from small British journals, which might otherwise go unnoted. Although ABELL seized being available electronically after 1997, current hard copy volumes are available in the reference stacks, call # Ref/2011/.M69.
Electronic Journal Center (EJC) (OhioLINK)
EJC is a current full-text database covering scholarly journals in literature and many other disciplines. Students who rely exclusively on EJC should note that they are casting a narrow net in their research. EJC will provide only those publications available full-text to all OhioLINK libraries through licensing agreements with the publishers. To avoid overlooking an important study available uniquely in Grasselli or another library, also consider using the MLAIB and some other databases listed in these resource pages.
JSTOR
JSTOR's collections provide electronic access to back issues of core journals in the humanities, social sciences and sciences. The same warning exists for JSTOR as exists for the EJC above. Students seeking more comprehensive coverage in their research should also consult the MLAIB and other databases mentioned in these resource pages.

International scholarship is covered on ancient Greek and Latin language and linguistics, Greek and Roman history, literature, philosophy, and specialized topics. The era covered is from the second millennium B.C. to 800 A.D.

More Information Web of Science (1980 - Current)
Web of Science contains Arts and Humanities Citation Index, which covers leading journals in the arts and humanities. A special feature of a "citation index" is the ability to search for a specific book or article mentioned within the bibliographies of other articles; this helps to trace the impact of one scholar's ideas on another. Citation indexes are also helpful in finding scholarly reviews of scholarly books. To look for reviews, search the book as the source being cited.
