Laptop Computer Loan Policies

  • Only John Carroll University students with a JCU library account in good standing (no fines, no overdue items) may check out laptops.
  • Students must be pre-authorized by completing a Registration Form. There will be a 24-48 hour wait while the information on the form is verified. Obtain a Registration Form from the Circulation Desk in the Library and return with a photocopy of your JCU ID and a driver’s license or other photo ID.
  • Anyone checking out laptops must have a valid JCU ID card. No other forms of ID will be accepted. A second form of Identification will be needed for the initial registration.
  • Laptops will circulate for three hours and may be renewed once if there is no waiting list. This renewal can be done online during the last 30 minutes of the loan or by calling the circulation desk (x4233). (Do not use the battery powered laptop clock to determine the time.)
  • No laptops will be checked out within 90 minutes of closing. All laptops will be due to the Circulation Desk one-half hour before closing.
  • Laptops cannot be reserved or put "on-hold". If all laptops are checked out, a wait list will be started. The student must be in the library when the laptop becomes available.
  • An A/C power adapter will be included. The battery power will diminish within a few hours. Also included will be a case, an Ethernet cable, and a mouse.
  • Software available on the laptop will include all the software currently available in the Computer Commons.
  • Anything saved to the hard drive will be automatically cleared when the laptops are turned off. Borrowers should save their work to a floppy disc, Flash Drive or network folder. Any work unsaved when a laptop is rebooted is lost.
  • Files may be saved to a diskette, Flash Drive, burned to a CD, e-mailed as an attachment, or printed in the library. Borrowers must provide their own diskette or blank CD.
  • Laptops may be used in Grasselli Library and Breen Learning Center only and may not be taken from the building.
  • Laptops will be checked out from the Circulation Desk and returned there.
  • Late fees are $5.00 per hour. The maximum fine is $100.00. There is NO grace period. Any laptop that is not returned within 24 hrs. will be declared stolen, and a total charge of $1900 will be billed to the patron’s account. ($1765 equipment replacement fee, $100.00 fine, $35 processing fee)
  • Borrowers are responsible for any damage done to the laptop while it is checked out to them and will be charged a damage fee of up to $1765. Also, borrowers will be charged $1800 if a laptop is reported missing or stolen while checked out to their account.
