
Library CollectionsAudio-Visual CollectionAudiovisual materials are located on the lower (1st) floor of the library, below the reference area (Grasselli side of the library). This collection includes circulating DVDs, VHS tapes, and sound recordings covering both academic subjects and materials for leisure viewing or listening. There are also carrols available for viewing or listening to items in the library, with VCR's, DVD player and audio CD and tape players. Headphones may be checked out from the circulation desk. Curriculum Materials Center (CMC)The CMC is on the third floor of the library, on the Grasselli side. It contains a large collection of curriculum planning materials for preschool through 12th grade, across all commonly taught subject areas. Included in the collection are text books, kits, manipulatives, Ohio curricula standards, and more. Also in this area is the Children's literature collection, composed of reading materials for school-aged children. It includes Caldecott and Newbery medal winners and many other classic children's favorites. Electronic CollectionsThis page describes the many electronic book collections to which the library provides access. These cover a range of subjects including technology, medicine, humanities, business and other academic subject areas, as well as a wide variety of reference books. General CollectionThis is our circulating print collection of over 700,000 cataloged books, found on the Breen side of the main (2nd) floor, and the third floor, both sides. JCU Masters Degrees Theses and EssaysFound on the upper (3rd) floor on the Grasselli side of the library (above the main entrance), this is a collection of master's degree theses submitted by JCU graduate students. Some other types of documents, such as essays, are also located here. The materials are arranged first by department (Chemistry, English, etc.), then by year, then by author. This collection may also be browsed online by searching by title: JCU Masters Degree Theses and Essays. This search results in a complete list of titles in the collection. John Carroll University ArchivesThis page describes the archives holdings, policies, hours and contact information, and links to related forms. MicroformsMicroforms are located near the audio-visual collection on the lower (1st) floor. The library has a number of current newspapers on microfilm including the Plain Dealer, the New York Times and Wall Street Journal. There are also a number of historical collections in various micro-formats including the Early American Imprints of the American Antiquarian Society, the Landmarks of Science collection and some Vatican materials. The Library has an extensive microfiche collection including many United States government documents and ERIC publications since 1990. Viewers with attached printers are located here also. Periodicals and Newspapers (Print)Current issues of print periodicals are found on the first (lower) floor on the Grasselli side of the library. These are arranged alphabetically by title. Older periodicals are found on the lower level Breen side, and are hard-cover bound and arranged by Library of Congress call number. Newspapers are on the Grasselli lower level, behind the Audio-Visual collection. Recent issues (last 3 months) of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and others are found here. Older issues of newspapers are found either through our databases (such as Lexis-Nexis, or America's Newspapers) or in microforms. Foreign language newspapers and magazines are also located in the newspaper shelving. Popular Reading CollectionProvided courtesy of the Cleveland Heights-University Heights public library, this collection contains both fiction and non-fiction books for leisure reading purposes, as well as audio-books. Please visit the Information Technology Services Printing FAQ's Reference CollectionThe reference collection is non-circulating and is located on the main (2nd) floor next to the reference desk. Here are found dictionaries, encyclopedias, indexes, concordances, atlases, and other reference resources on both general and specialized topics. The LoPresti room is a glassed-in room to the rear of the reference desk. It contains non-circulating business reference materials. St. Francis Xavier Spiritual ReadingThese items focus on spiritual reflection, and are arranged to be browsed by author, rather than by call number. They may be checked out at the circulation desk. Special CollectionsInformation about and guidelines for use of the library's special collections. These include rare, valuable, or fragile items requiring particular care and security. Located on the 3rd floor of the library, special collections houses the GK Chesterton collection, Cleveland Collection of local history materials, and other items of special interest. |
